“Hi, my name is Justin Ehrhardt.  I am the head trainer over at CrossFit Rise in Schaumburg.  I met Charlie [Cates] some time ago and I just wanted to learn a little bit more about [Muscle Activation Techniques™] MAT™, what it is, and how I can benefit from it.  I have been here [at Muscle Activation Schaumburg] for about 12 sessions.  I didn’t know what to expect.  I heard about MAT™ maybe 10 years ago.  I thought the trainers who were doing it really had a good grasp on what they were doing so I wanted to find out more.  Meeting with Charlie, he is a super nice guy, pretty thorough as far as explaining what he was going to do.  What I experienced was, over the first few sessions, I didn’t really know what was happening.  My body was kind of rewiring itself as far as making [muscle] contractions in positions I don’t normally contract in.  I lift heavy weights overhead quite often.  Pick up weight from the ground.  Squat, pullups, and various gymnastics movements, so my body kind of worked very efficiently in certain ways but it was very obvious that my body wasn’t contracting optimally based on some of the muscle tests he was doing.  About four sessions in I started to feel different, like my shoulders kind of freed up a little bit, I moved a little better, and I was actually setting personal records for different lifts.  My jerk went up a kilo, which is a big deal these days.  A couple snatch PR’s in there.  Some real good squat days.  Just things that I don’t really expect to be improving on, but I am actually getting stronger in different ways than I expected to in a pretty short amount of time.  So just surprisingly hitting records for myself that I wasn’t expecting.”
