How do you get back into working out consistently after taking some time off?

For some people, they can just put themselves in the same environment again and the habit of exercising comes back as easily as riding a bike.

For others, it can feel like they are starting from square one trying to rebuild their actions, mindset, and schedule to work out regularly.

If you find yourself more in the first group, awesome! Keep doing your thing.

But, if you find yourself more in the second group, here are a few things that can make starting up again a little easier:

1. Decide that you are going to exercise – Don’t leave it up to a chance opening in your schedule or seeing if you feel like it. Make the decision that you are going to exercise, commit to a time when you are going to do it, and do not let yourself off the hook from that commitment.

2. Set your phone timer to remind you to get up and move – Have it go off every 45 to 60 minutes, reminding you to stop what you are doing and start moving around for three to five minutes. Do this consistently throughout your day for just a couple of days and you will be primed to do longer workouts.

3. Start with the workouts you enjoy the most – Maybe you love playing sports, going for runs, or walking outside in the evening. Do the activities that you really enjoy and it will make getting back into the habit MUCH easier. There are so many options for you to choose from, so pick one that you know feels good for you and you enjoy and start in!

Getting back into working out after taking some time off can feel daunting, and sometimes the hardest part is overcoming the thoughts of, “I don’t want to feel how much I’ve lost since I stopped…”

But always remember that your body WILL get stronger, it WILL get more physically fit, even if it feels like you have taken quite a few steps back from where you were.

Decide that you are going to do it, prime yourself by being active throughout your day, and then start with the workouts that you enjoy doing the most, and you will be back into the swing of things in no time!

The only thing that is holding you back from rebuilding your strength and fitness is not taking action. Your body is ready, you just need to start. You got this!!

Here’s to health,
