Golf Season – Tips to keep your body healthy and strong

Welcome back to this week’s edition of 2-Minute Tuesdays where we are talking about one exercise topic for two minutes and giving you three reasons why you should follow our advice.  Now this week, we are talking to those of you who are getting ready to hit the links. You are preparing for golf season, but are unsure of what you should do aside from just getting practice swings in.  Here are some things you can start doing now to make sure your body stays healthy.

1) Schedule With Your Local MAT® Specialist

Tip Number One To Make Sure Your Body Stays Healthy During Golf Season:  Find or schedule with your local MAT® specialist. We cannot emphasize this enough.  When you are golfing, you are doing a lot of repetition of the same exact motion over and over and over again.  If you are feeling aches and pains already, that is probably not going to go away, so make sure you are taking steps to strengthen those motions and really make sure your muscles are ready for golf season.

2) Keep Up With Your Resistance Training

Tip Number Two To Make Sure Your Body Stays Healthy During Golf Season:  Make sure to keep up with your resistance training, or start if you haven’t yet.  Resistance training should be done at a minimum of twice per week. This is going to make sure that your muscles stay strong, your joints stay supported, and when you are out on the course swinging the golf club everything stays moving well and your body stays functioning properly.

3) Differentiate Between Training Skills & Strength

Tip Number Three To Make Sure Your Body Stays Healthy During Golf Season:  Always differentiate between working on golf skills and when you are strengthening your body.  A lot of times people like to blend the two by doing “golf strengthening”, but what happens is the strengthening exercises you are doing become more repetitions of golf.  You can still work on your skills, but just separate this from when you are doing strengthening exercises.

Action Step:  Have separate times when you are working on your golf skills and when you are training your body to do those skills better through resistance training and MAT®.  Having these two different times of training your body will help to ensure that your body stays safe and your golf mechanics continue to improve!
