2-Minute Tuesdays

Preparing for retirement? We have three exercise tips for you.

Welcome back to this week’s edition of 2-Minute Tuesdays where we are talking about one exercise topic for two minutes and giving you three reasons why you should follow our advice. Now this week, we are talking to those of you who are preparing for retirement.  What things do you need to keep in mind with your exercise as you begin this new stage of life?

1) Start Resistance Training Now

Tip number one – start resistance training now.  Resistance training is something that keeps your body functioning well as a body.  Your body is the thing that is going to allow you to do all the activities you want to do in your retirement.  So, start resistance training now, and plan to continue resistance training for the rest of your life.

2) Schedule Your Exercise

Tip number two – schedule your exercise.  One of the most common things we here from our clients who are retired is that even though they don’t have to go to work, their days fill up fast.  If you don’t prioritize your exercise by scheduling it beforehand, it is likely to not get done.

Action Step:  Break out your daily planner and write down the exact time you are going to get your workout in and for how long.  Then, protect that time! Do not allow other obligations or requests to creep into that time you have blocked off to exercise.  Getting into this habit now before you head off into retirement will make it easier to keep the habit going once you are officially retired.

3) Take Care Of Your Aches and Pains

Tip number three – take care of the aches, pains, and chronic tightness things now.  These issues are easier to take care of the younger you are and the more active you are.  Make sure you are scheduling with your MAT® specialist, your chiropractor, your massage therapist, or anybody else you utilize to make sure your body is functioning well.

Action Step:  Whatever you do to make sure you are managing the aches and pains you feel in your body, take care of those now.  Being proactive about the function of your body will pay dividends as you continue into your retirement.
