3 Considerations When Doing Cardio

Welcome back to this week’s edition of 2-Minute Tuesdays where we are bringing you one exercise topic, talking about it for two minutes, and giving you three reasons why you should follow our advice.  This week we are talking about cardio.  Cardio is something a lot of people who exercise love to do, but here are three considerations for you if you are going to engage in a cardiovascular activity.

1) Cardio Doesn’t Have To Be Slow & Long

The first thing is that cardio doesn’t have to be slow and long.  Often times when we think of doing cardiovascular exercise we think of going for an hour walk or a 45-minute jog.  We actually recommend that you mix it up.  Some days, do 10 minutes of high intensity, and other days do your hour-long jog.

Action Step:  Have at least half of your cardio days be done as higher-intensity intervals.  The other days you can do slower, longer-duration exercise if you would like.

2) Consider The Quality Of Your Joints

Tip number two when talking cardio is to consider the quality of your joints.  We recommend that you get your body assessed by somebody who knows how your joints should be moving, such as a Muscle Activation Techniques™ practitioner, to see if there is anything funky going on with your joints before you go out and hit the pavement or go on a long bike ride.  Make sure that your joints are supported by your muscles to help them stay protected and to allow you to continue to do the cardio exercises that you enjoy.

Action Step:  Find a certified Muscle Activation Techniques™ practitioner in your area to assess your body and figure out where your joint issues may be.

3) Make Sure Cardio Is Not Your Entire Workout Life

Tip number three – make sure cardio is not your entire workout life.  Make sure it is part of your workout life, but make sure you are also including types of resistance training as well.

Action Step:  For every cardio day that you have, match it with at least one (or more) strength/resistance training days.  Not sure which resistance training exercises would be appropriate for your body?  Connect with us to schedule a consultation!
